Born at No. 14 Mary Arches in Exeter, the XIV brand name needs no further introduction. Exeter was the westernmost Legionary Roman fortress in Britain in 1 AD, as well as one of the furthest west outposts of the Roman Empire, so it felt fetting to utilise Roman numerals for the brand's logo. The wavy line above 'XIV' is a nod to the River Exe and the city's history as a Roman 'fort'.

Other elements of the branding are formed from the city's more recent history. The Lethbridge coat of arms from the mid-1600s depicts Mary Arches and a Raven. All three elements - the Lethbridge name, raven and Mary Arches graphic - were incorporated into the product design. Even the shape of the bottle is a nod to 17th Century glassware that was used at the time to bottle 'Mother's Ruin'.
